RF SIGNAL GENERATION / MEASUREMENT / CONTROL FAQ

Mini-Circuits synthesized signal generators (SSG series) cover 1 MHz to 44 GHz across the family. The SSG-6001RC starts at 1 MHz, the SSG-9G-RC covers 10 MHz–9 GHz, and the SSG-44G-RC and SSG-44GHP-RC extend to 44 GHz. Mid-range and mmWave options include the SSG-15G-RC (15 GHz), SSG-30G-RC (30 GHz) and SSG-33GHP-RC (33 GHz).

The SSG-1R5G-RC, SSG-1R5GD-RC, SSG-5N9G-RC, SSG-5N9GD-RC, SSG-8N12G-RC, SSG-8N12GD-RC, SSG-9G-RC, SSG-9GD-RC, SSG-R7N6G-RC and SSG-R7N6GD-RC all support CW, pulsed, AM, FM and chirp modulation. The higher-frequency models (SSG-15G-RC, SSG-30G-RC, SSG-33GHP-RC, SSG-44G-RC) support CW and pulsed modulation only.

Yes. Five dual-channel models are available, all identified by the “D” in the part number: SSG-1R5GD-RC (10–1500 MHz), SSG-R7N6GD-RC (700–6000 MHz), SSG-9GD-RC (10 MHz–9 GHz), SSG-5N9GD-RC (5–9 GHz) and SSG-8N12GD-RC (8–12.5 GHz). Dual-channel units halve rack space and cost per channel in two-tone, phase-coherent or MIMO test setups.

CW sensors (e.g. PWR-8GHS) measure unmodulated carriers and are the most economical choice for basic power measurement. RMS sensors (e.g. PWR-6RMS-RC, PWR-18RMS-RC) measure true average power of modulated signals such as LTE, 5G NR and Wi-Fi, where crest factor would otherwise cause errors. Peak & average sensors (e.g. PWR-8P-RC, PWR-18PWHS-RC) capture both peak envelope power and average power, which is required for pulsed radar and burst transmissions.

The PWR series spans 9 kHz to 40 GHz with input power from –60 dBm to +20 dBm. The PWR-4GHS starts lowest at 9 kHz, the PWR-40PW-RC reaches highest at 40 GHz, and the PWR-18PWHS-RC covers 50 MHz–18 GHz with 80 dB typical dynamic range. Sensors with –60 dBm sensitivity (PWR-8P-RC, PWR-8PW-RC, PWR-9PWHS-RC, PWR-9RMS-RC, PWR-18PWHS-RC, PWR-18RMS-RC) deliver the widest 80 dB dynamic range.

The PWR-18PWHS-RC and PWR-9PWHS-RC are the fastest, with a typical measurement speed of 13 nanoseconds (1.3 × 10⁻⁵ ms). The PWR-8PW-RC follows at 50 ns and the PWR-40PW-RC at 50 ns. By comparison, standard CW sensors such as the PWR-6GHS measure in about 30 ms — roughly a million times slower — which is why peak sensors are the right choice for pulse profiling and rise/fall-time capture.

Yes. The PWR-2.5GHS-75 is a 75 Ω USB power sensor covering 100 kHz to 2.5 GHz with a –30 to +20 dBm input range and 50 dB typical dynamic range. It is intended for cable TV, DOCSIS, broadcast and other 75 Ω infrastructure where a 50 Ω sensor would introduce mismatch error.

Yes. The FCPM-6000RC is a combined USB/Ethernet frequency counter and power meter covering 1 MHz to 6 GHz, with an input range of –30 to +20 dBm, 50 dB typical dynamic range, 30 ms power measurement speed, and a selectable frequency sample time of 0.1 to 3 seconds. It removes the need for two separate benchtop instruments in production and field-service setups.

Yes. Every unit ships with a user-friendly GUI plus a full API, supporting USB and Ethernet control; several signal generators (SSG-9G-RC, SSG-33GHP-RC, SSG-44G-RC and others) additionally support daisy chaining so multiple units run from a single host connection. DLLs and ActiveX/COM objects allow integration with C#, C++, Python, MATLAB and LabVIEW, making the instruments straightforward to drop into an automated test executive.

Yes. The SSG-1R5G-RC, SSG-1R5GD-RC, SSG-R7N6G-RC, SSG-R7N6GD-RC, SSG-5N9G-RC, SSG-5N9GD-RC, SSG-8N12G-RC, SSG-8N12GD-RC, SSG-9G-RC and SSG-9GD-RC all run from PoE or a 6 V DC supply. PoE operation simplifies remote and distributed test installations by carrying data and power over a single cable; the higher-frequency models (SSG-30G-RC, SSG-33GHP-RC, SSG-44G-RC) require 12 V DC.
