SMA connectors should be tightened to 8 in-lb (approximately 0.9 NĀ·m), which is the value the Mini-Circuits TRQ-516-08 break-over torque wrench is calibrated to. Under-tightening causes intermittent contact and poor return loss; over-tightening deforms the coupling nut and dielectric, permanently degrading VSWR and insertion loss. Using a calibrated break-over wrench rather than fingers or pliers is the only way to make the connection repeatable across measurements.

A break-over torque wrench has a hinged head that pivots (“breaks over”) the moment the preset torque is reached, giving an unmistakable tactile signal to stop turning. Unlike a click-type wrench, it cannot apply further torque past the break point even if you keep pulling, which makes it effectively impossible to over-tighten an RF connector. Mini-Circuits’ TRQ series uses this mechanism at factory-calibrated settings of 8 in-lb and 4 in-lb.

The TRQ-516-08 is a single 8 in-lb break-over torque wrench that fits SMA, 1.85 mm, 2.4 mm, 2.92 mm and 3.5 mm connectors, because all five share the same 5/16-inch coupling nut hex. It measures 6.44 inches in length (case style MY2727). One wrench therefore covers the entire precision coaxial range from SMA up to 65+ GHz interfaces, which is why it’s the most common single purchase for a microwave lab.

The TRQ-10-06 is a 4 in-lb break-over torque wrench (approximately 0.45 NĀ·m) designed specifically for 1.0 mm connectors, with a 5.18-inch length. The lower torque setting is essential — 1.0 mm interfaces used for 110 GHz work have very fine mechanical tolerances, and applying the 8 in-lb value appropriate for SMA will damage them. Do not substitute an SMA wrench on a 1.0 mm connector.

The TRQ-N20-8, TRQ-N20.6-8 and TRQ-N34-8 are all 8 in-lb break-over wrenches for N-type connectors, but each has a different hex opening size to fit a different N-type coupling nut or panel-mount nut. The TRQ-N20-8 and TRQ-N20.6-8 are 6.97 inches long and the TRQ-N34-8 is 7.09 inches. Check the hex flat dimension on your specific N-type hardware against the datasheet before ordering, since the wrong opening will round the nut.

An SMA wrench extension reaches connectors that a standard wrench cannot access — recessed ports, densely packed connector arrays, rack-mounted switch matrices, and test fixtures where surrounding hardware blocks a normal swing. Mini-Circuits offers three lengths: the HT-2-SMA at 2.50 inches, the HT-4-SMA at 4.00 inches, and the HT-8-SMA at 8.00 inches. They are particularly useful when cabling up multi-port switch matrices and signal distribution racks where dozens of SMA ports sit side by side.

Over-tightening deforms the connector’s mating plane and dielectric, which permanently increases VSWR and insertion loss and can shift the reference plane enough to invalidate a VNA calibration. The damage is usually invisible and often destroys the more expensive part — an over-torqued cable connector can ruin the instrument port it’s mated to. Because a single damaged VNA test port can cost more than an entire set of torque wrenches, calibrated tightening is standard practice in accredited labs.

Yes — break-over torque wrenches drift with use and should be recalibrated on a defined interval, typically every 12 months or after a set number of cycles, depending on your quality system and how heavily the wrench is used. Labs working to ISO 17025 or AS9100 will normally require calibration certificates and traceable recall dates for every torque tool on the bench. No. An open-end wrench, adjustable spanner or pliers applies uncontrolled torque and almost always exceeds the connector’s rating, and pliers additionally mar the nut flats. Equally important, a standard tool tends to grip the connector body rather than only the coupling nut, causing the center pin to rotate against the mating pin — this scores the contact surfaces and is one of the most common causes of degraded high-frequency performance. Always use a calibrated wrench sized for the interface.
